There's a version of coffee culture that's obsessed with perfection. Extraction times measured to the tenth of a second. Grind size adjusted by microns. Flavor notes dissected like a wine at auction.

There's nothing wrong with that-if it brings you joy. But for many people, the pursuit of the perfect cup becomes another source of anxiety. Another thing to optimize. Another way to fail.

Here's a different approach: presence over perfection.

Instead of asking "was that a perfect extraction?" ask "was I fully here while I made it?"

Instead of chasing an ideal flavor profile, notice the flavor you actually got-today, in this cup, with these beans and this water and this particular moment of your life.

The perfect cup is a moving target. Beans age. Seasons change. Your palate shifts. Even if you nail it once, you can't replicate the conditions forever.

But presence is always available. You can be fully here for a mediocre cup. And a mediocre cup, made and drunk with full attention, is worth more than a perfect cup you barely noticed.

Let go of the chase. The ritual isn't about the result-it's about the practice. And the practice is just showing up, day after day, and paying attention to what's in front of you.
